If you need more information than is available in The Punch Page or in the Punch Links, here is a list of Punch - related books. Unfortunately many of them are out of print and can be somewhat hard to locate. The John Collier / George Cruikshank book was originally published in 1828. The play recorded in it and the illustrations by Cruikshank have provided the inspiration for most Punch and Judy shows and puppets ever since. A facsimile of the book with color illustrations is available as a pdf file. Some of the more recent books use the Punch and Judy mystique or setting for their own purposes, but do provide evidence of how the spirit of Punch lives on in our culture. There is also a film titled The Punch & Judy Man (1963) directed by Jeremy Summers and starring Tony Hancock which may be useful. See Prof. Will's Reading List for even more resources. |
